Who Do You Love.
Jhené Aiko on meeting Drake for the first time, working on NWTS & why she considers Drake her ‘musical soulmate’.
"I met Drake through a mutual friend was like, “I think you would sound nice with him.”, and this was before he was popular and I didn’t know of him really. And I’m like “sure, you know.” I was pregnant at the time, actually I had just found out. But, I was still recording & no one knew that I was pregnant yet and I went in the studio and we recorded something. Like, I didn’t write what I recorded but I played him a song that someone else wrote that I basically demoed and he liked that, that was ‘July’. And then he took that song and took my hooks from it and made it into his song. And I was like, “oh, wow. We do sound good together, you know.”
Our styles would complement each other – our writing styles, our voices and so you know, every since then our first meeting for Nothing Was The Same it was like just an instant like – 40 played, you know, the beat and I’m like – his, his beats are super easy to write to and like they pull something out of me.
And, yea, Drake’s lyrics just makes me want to write something better – do a better melody and stuff like that. So, that’s why I consider him my ‘musical soulmate’.”
